A British Turkish councillor was
recently appointed the Mayor of the London Borough of Enfield. Labour
councillor Ali Bakır, originally from Kahramanmaras in southern Turkey , will
serve as Mayor for the next 12 months. Recently re-elected to represent Upper Edmonton for a second term, he takes over from incumbent
Chaudhury Anwar.

Bakır’s inauguration was attended by
Emirhan Yorulmazlar, the Turkish Consel-General in London ,
businessman Ali Matur, and fellow Labour councillors from Enfield and Haringey, together with members
of his family. Of Kurdish origin, Bakır is a businessman running a
continental-style supermarket in Ealing, west London .
